May 16, 2016. Bloomington, MN – Aviation-themed art is the centerpiece of the renovations at the Crowne Plaza AiRE. The 430-room property, adjacent to the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and the Hubert Humphrey Charter Terminal, is closely linked with the history of Minneapolis aviation. The hotel has commissioned art works from local artists as a way to support the artistic community and to educate guests about aviation history.

The aviation-theme begins with an arresting glass sculpture in the lobby by noted Minneapolis glass artist Michael Boyd. Boyd is not only a celebrated local artist but the founder of Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts (Foci MCGA), a non-profit glass studio, education center and exhibition space.

Beyond the lobby, Danny Kahler, a Minneapolis-based photographer, is treating the hotel as a gallery, using photographic installations with deep historical connections to both Minneapolis aviation and the general history of aviation.

“We’re creating a collection that covers every era,” Kahler says. “One of our staffers has been working on this project since last August, using the resources of the Minnesota Historical Society and the Library of Congress. We’re seeking the right mix of private, commercial and military imagery, from the Wright Brothers to modern day aircraft, and using a large number of images associated with Northwest Airlines and Delta.”

Kahler, who has a long track record of creative work with Midwestern lodging properties, specializes in discovering and using images that are both appealing and accurate. The team at Kahler Photo are taking the sourced images and creating an array of aviation themed prints and panels, some of them tightly cropped and taking on an abstract feeling. The images are then printed and mounted on acrylic, aluminum and wood, and hung using a special floating frame.

By working with local artists, Crowne Plaza AiRE will offer travelers a true sense of place rather than the typical generic art found in most hotels. The hotel is also opening a second floor gallery which will hold rotating exhibitions of the work of local artists.
